The rose-growing industry, Brookshire Grocery Company, Trane and Cavender’s are important sectors of the Tyler, TX economy. Healthcare is also integral with Trinity Mother Frances Health System and East Texas Medical Center serving as the two biggest employers.

The Tyler Independent School District, Whitehouse Independent School District, Chapel Hill Independent School District and several private schools provide regional education for K-12 students. The University of Texas at Tyler and University of Texas Health Center at Tyler are both part of the University of Texas System, while Tyler Junior College and Texas College also provide higher education in Tyler.


HISTORY

Smith County was created by the Texas Legislature in 1846 and four years later Tyler was incorporated. By 1860, there were more than 1,000 people living in Tyler, TX. During the Civil War the city was the site of the largest Confederate ordnance plant as well as being near Camp Ford, a Confederate prison camp. As the city continued to grow; the railroad, education and agriculture became important industries. In the 1930s, an economic boom was created with the discovery of the East Texas Oilfield.

CLIMATE

Weather in Tyler is typical of East Texas which can be unpredictable, particularly in the spring. The climate is classified as humid subtropical. Mid-90s are normal summer highs with rainfall averaging 48 inches each year. In the winter the low temperature can fall below 40. Sunshine occurs on 218 days each year.

The list of activities is unmatched for a city the size of Tyler, Texas. In addition to the many museums, historic homes, nationally-recognized zoo and symphony, Tyler contains 26 parks, 66 tennis courts, 26 baseball fields, 15 soccer fields, nine golf courses, city pools and the Glass Recreation Center. There are also over 250 restaurants, more than 2,000 hotel rooms and countless shops.

Harvey Convention Center hosts conferences, receptions, exhibits, meetings and more. The Goodman-LeGrand House & Museum has been a Texas Historic Landmark since 1964. The Rose Garden Center offers free admission to the public and serves as the gateway to the Tyler Municipal Rose Garden.

The most well-known annual celebration in Tyler is the Texas Rose Festival, which includes a parade, the coronation of the Rose Queen and other events.
